One absence, four different market effects
A spread expresses expected margin, so an absence matters most when it changes the gap between the teams. Losing a starting quarterback may move a favorite from -7 to -3.5, while the same downgrade for an underdog could push its opponent from -7 to -10.5.
The moneyline translates that revised outlook into win probability. Its movement does not mirror the spread evenly: shifting from a small favorite to a small underdog can produce a conspicuous price change, while another half-point on a large favorite’s spread may barely affect its already-high win probability.
Scoring environment versus individual opportunity
A total reflects expected scoring by both teams. The familiar pattern is quarterback out, total down: weaker passing, fewer explosive plays, and a more conservative plan. But the matchup can overturn that assumption.
