Each wager asks a different question: margin, outright winner, combined score, or individual performance.

The threshold determines what must happen; the price determines the risk and potential profit. At -190, a $190 winning stake earns $100, while -110 requires $110 to earn $100. Settlement rules matter too: overtime may count, an exact whole-number result may push, and a player prop could be voided if the player never enters the game. Reading those terms is as important as evaluating the matchup.

A point spread changes the question from who wins? to who covers? If Las Vegas is -3.5 (-110), it must win by at least four points.
Whole-number spreads can produce a push. At Las Vegas -3, an 86–83 finish normally returns the stake rather than creating a win or loss.

Small differences matter. -3 is better than -3.5 for the favorite because a three-point win pushes instead of losing. At the same line, -105 is better than -115 because it costs less for the same potential profit.

Home court may help explain why a team is favored or why a spread moves, but it does not alter the rules. The home team still must win a moneyline bet or cover its listed handicap.

If the teams combine for 159 points, the over wins and the under loses. At 158 points, the reverse occurs. Half-point totals cannot tie, while a whole-number total of 158 produces a push at exactly 158, usually returning the stake.

Player props isolate one athlete’s result across points, rebounds, assists, made three-pointers, or combinations such as points + rebounds + assists (PRA).

A standard over/under pairs a line with a price: A’ja Wilson over 24.5 points (-110). She needs 25; 24 loses. A 30+ points alternative at +180 pays more but wins less often; milestone wording controls settlement.

Why props change near tipoff

Books often wait for injury reports and projected starters, so props may appear late. A missing guard can increase a teammate’s ball-handling, while a frontcourt absence may shift rebound expectations. Confirmed lineups, minutes limits, or rest news can move the line, price, or market availability.

Grading rules vary by sportsbook. A late scratch is commonly voided, but markets may require a start, any playing time, or another participation threshold. Overtime usually counts; shortened games and stat corrections follow house rules. Compare identical lines and check participation, overtime, push, and correction policies.

Quarter and half bets use the same moneyline, spread, and total logic as full-game markets, but only scoring within the named period counts. Because the settlement window is shorter, a slow start or late foul sequence can have an outsized effect. Sportsbook policies still matter; the first-quarter settlement rules clarify details such as period completion and overtime treatment.

Alternate lines exchange probability for price. Moving a favorite from -6.5 to -3.5 makes covering more likely, but usually produces a less attractive payout. Choosing a more demanding line does the reverse.

A parlay combines multiple selections into one ticket. The potential return rises as legs are added, but every leg must win unless the book’s rules reduce or void the wager. One loss normally defeats the entire parlay.

Live odds update during play as the score, time remaining, possession, fouls, and player availability change. The contrast between live and pregame pricing is mainly speed: an in-play number may shift or disappear before a wager is accepted.

Futures price outcomes decided weeks or months later: WNBA champion, conference winner, award recipient, or playoff qualification. They work much like long-horizon moneylines, with each selection carrying American odds.

A $20 championship bet at +500 returns $120 in total if it wins: $100 profit plus the stake. Longer odds can offer larger payouts, but the price may shorten or lengthen as injuries, trades, form, and standings change.

The trade-off is time. The stake remains tied up until settlement, limiting its use elsewhere. If a team is eliminated or a player can no longer win an award, the ticket ordinarily becomes a loss—even if the season has not ended.
